After all, tile is hard, grout feels solid, and backer board seems tough enough. So, is a waterproof membrane mandatory, or is it just an unnecessary extra cost pushed by contractors and hardware stores?

1. The Big Myth: "Tile and Grout Are Waterproof"
The most common misconception in bathroom renovation is that tile and grout seal out water
Tile & Grout Are Porous: Standard ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tiles—along with traditional cementitious grout—are water-resistant, not waterproof.
